Large Michigan businesses, especially manufacturers, are already required to have a policy in place for recycling batteries and electronics. Individuals are exempt from these requirements, and yet American consumers throw away more than three billion batteries each year.
That’s a lot of toxic waste flowing into our air, water, and soil. It’s also an awful lot of materials which could be salvaged and reused.
And even if Michigan consumers are exempt from recycling requirements, many residents still want to do their part.
So what stops them?More
Small Employers Urged to Apply for Matching MIWISH Grants of Up to $5,000
Employers with up to 250 employees can now apply for a matching grant of up to $5,000 to make improvements in their workplace safety and health, the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) announced today. The goal of the MIOSHA Workplace Improvement to Safety and Health (MIWISH) grant program is to create a safer and healthier work environment and reduce the risk of injury and illness to workers in Michigan. The world’s largest free jazz festival kicks off this weekend, and Detroit Public Television for the first time will be broadcasting live from the Detroit Jazz Festival in a 90-minute program hosted by our own Fred Nahhat and Jazz Fest President Chris Collins.More

Michigan Solar Home & Sustainability Tour will be held on Saturday, October 6 as part of the American Solar Energy Society’s (ASES) National Solar Home Tour. The Tour is the world’s largest grassroots solar event. The Great Lakes Renewable Energy Assoc., the state chapter of ASES, assists volunteer coordinators who organize community tours that you can attend. Tours are being held in 13 communities on Saturday, Oct. 6 (unless otherwise noted): Caro, Chelsea, Clarkston, Commerce Twp, Detroit, Holland, Lansing, Linden, Fowlerville (Oct 6 & 7), Riverdale, Saline, Traverse City, and Ypsilanti (Oct 7). The Michigan Conservation Stewards Program (CSP) is currently enrolling participants for programs being held this Fall in Oakland County!
CSP is a volunteer leader training program designed for individuals interested in learning about Michigan’s ecological foundations, history of conservation activities, and aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems and the threats they currently face. The core curriculum is centered around an ecosystem-based management approach that prepares participants to not only carry out and lead community-based volunteer conservation management activities, but to also share their knowledge with others to help restore and sustain healthy ecosystems throughout Michigan.More
Health care providers that serve Medicaid beneficiaries are facing an upcoming enrollment deadline that is necessary for them to continue to receive payments from Medicaid.
While the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) has revised the timeline to give providers more time to enroll, the department is urging providers to complete the screening and enrollment process as soon as possible.More
Arsenal of Innovation event aims to connect local vendors to federal and military contracts
East Lansing was the second stop today in a four-month statewide tour to support Michigan defense-related businesses. The “Arsenal of Innovation” event aims to inform and assist Michigan companies that are interested in pursuing contracts with Department of Defense (DOD) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The event was hosted by the Michigan Defense Center, part of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, and keynoted by U.S. Rep. Mike Bishop (Rochester). Additional forums will be held around the state through October.More
