Qualified Energy Conservation Bonds (QECBs) were authorized by the federal government for states, territories, large local governments and tribal governments to finance energy efficiency and renewable energy projects. The $3.2 billion total was divided among eligible jurisdictions according to population and states were directed to sub-allocate a portion of their allocation to large municipalities with populations of 100,000 or more. These counties, municipalities or tribes can issue bonds up to their sub-allocation cap amount or waive and return any or all of the allocation to the State. The 2016 Annual Sierra Club Green Cruise will occur this year on Saturday August 13 with bike rides, a street fair, and the grand parade of walkers, skaters, bicyclists, and others using non-motorized transportation. Begun in 2006 as a green reaction and counter event to the annual “Dream Cruise” in Metro Detroit, the event has become a regular summer happening and popular event for families and environmentalists. Held in Downtown Ferndale, the Green Cruise always falls on the Saturday preceding the Dream Cruise.
In addition to the parade that begins at 1 pm on E. Nine Mile Road at Woodward Avenue there will be three organized bicycle rides this year including a 42 mile ride to Belle Isle that starts at 8 a.m., a 22 mile ride through Royal Oak and Berkeley to Birmingham that starts at 9 a.m. and a four mile family ride around Ferndale that begins at noon. Get details or register at sierraclub.org/green-cruise. More
