Health Division Kicks Off Flu Season
Oakland County Health Division launches their annual flu vaccination program on Tuesday, Oct. 4, County Executive L. Brooks Patterson announced today. The flu vaccine guards against as many as four flu viruses which are most likely to occur this season.
“Our goal is to keep our residents healthy this flu season,” Patterson said. “We urge them to take the necessary precautions against the flu including getting vaccinated.”
Flu shots are available for $25 at both Health Division clinics in Pontiac and Southfield. Individuals 65 years and older qualify for a high-dose flu shot which costs $43. Flu shot clinic hours are Noon – 8p.m. Mondays and 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays. These are walk-in clinics. Prepayment and registration are not needed.More

City Responds to Today’s Flash Flooding
The Detroit Water & Sewerage Department (DWSD), in coordination with other city departments, is responding today to the severe flash flooding that is occurring across Metropolitan Detroit. DWSD along with crews from the departments of Public Works and General Services, will be in neighborhoods throughout the day clearing catch basins and removing debris to reduce street flooding. The City has reassigned crews normally assigned to non-critical duties to assist with this effort. More

Schuette: Michigan Law Allows Low-Achieving Schools To Be Closed This School Year If They Fail To Show Improvement
LANSING – Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette today released an official legal opinion clarifying state law regarding the potential closure of underachieving schools in Detroit by the State School Reform Officer (SRO). The opinion states that under current Michigan law, schools operated by the Detroit Public School Community District are subject to closure before the end of the current school year if they are among the lowest-achieving 5% of all public schools for the immediately preceding 3 school years.
MSF approves funds for major developments in Detroit’s New Center and Corktown
Two high-profile projects expected to serve as catalysts for further economic development in Detroit’s New Center and Corktown received support today from the Michigan Strategic Fund. Third & Grand development and the rehabilitation of the Checker Cab building – along with additional properties around the site – are expected to begin construction by the end of the year. Leasing space is projected by the end of 2018.More
DNR managed waterfowl hunt areas to host open houses in early October
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources will host open houses at several of its managed waterfowl hunt areas and offer driving tours of each of the areas in early October to celebrate the Michigan Waterfowl Legacy.More
