The Big D Finals at University of Detroit Mercy Calihan Hall brought many fans in support of the Detroit Public School’s PSL Varsity Basketball Championship Tournaments between Cass Tech Lady Technicians vs M.L. King Lady Crusaders and Renaissance Phoenix vs Western International Cowboys, Friday, February 20, 2015.
The crowd witnessed the honorees of the Detroit Public School League 2014-15 ALL-CITY Girls Basketball and the Detroit Public School League 2014-15 ALL-CITY Boys Basketball that stood mid court during half time where they received their Medals of Honor. Honoree Karmari Newman, a 6-3 guard, Jr., of East English Village High School in particular was honored on the (FIRST TEAM) ALL-CITY Boys Basketball as being the leading scorer city-wide in the Public School League. In the girls contest, Cass Tech was defeated by Detroit King, 66-53 final score, with this being King’s fourth consecutive title championship. In the boys contest, Western International defeated Detroit Renaissance, 46-45 final, claiming their championship city title in which they hadn’t claimed since 1922. Last, but not least to mention during this All-City Classic Championship game, was the focus on Delonda Little, who has been officiating basketball in the PSL for 11 years, was the first time ever female referee to officiate the boys City Basketball Championship game at Calihan Hall. Even when it came down to the wire and the energy and tension was high during Western and Renaissance contest, Little maintained composure and collective poise in her assurance to maintain the control and flow of the game.
