A new Sunday tradition has begun at Detroit’s historic Eastern Market.
Sunday June 1 marked the first street market with a Michigan-made focus that will run every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. until Sept. 28.
This new Sunday Street Market is expected to house nearly 80 vendors in Sheds 2 and 3 featuring home goods, art, jewelry, Michigan-made products, antiques, entertainment, food trucks and more.
“For over a century, Eastern Market has been pivotal in connecting folks with local fresh produce and plants, serving as an important economic engine for our region,” said Dan Carmody, president, Eastern Market Corporation, in a statement. “The Sunday Street Market seeks to accomplish a similar mission for non-food goods.”
Eastern Market is considered America’s oldest continuously operating market district and has served the city since 1891.
Vendors with Michigan-made products expected to sell at the new Sunday market include: Detroit Manufacturing (Michigan-focused clothing and artifacts), City Girls Soap (hand-made soap from goats milk), Firebrand Candles (made-in-Detroit candles), Branded By Detroit (unique wood pieces from reclaimed wood in the city of Detroit), Goodwill Industries (vintage clothing), Rebel Nell (jewelry made from graffiti) and Don Calloway (artist).
Each Sunday will feature a rotating entertainment schedule.
The inaugural Sunday Street Market featured an exhibition by Nicole Macdonald, an artist and filmmaker, entitled “Factory Windows.”
This exhibit featured historic Detroit figures including Mother Waddles, Yusef Shakur, Father Clement Kern, John Conyers, Erma Henderson, Rosa Parks and Chief Pontiac.
Other entertainment booked for the month of June: a June 15 car show and a June 22 “Green-It-Yourself” Expo hosted by the Greening of Detroit.
June also marks the start of the Eastern Market’s Tuesday market, a smaller version of the Saturday market known for its wide variety of produce options.
Eastern Market’s popular Third Thursdays series of events starts on June 17 and ends Sept. 18.
