Detroit Audubon Society is a member-based nonprofit organization of diverse individuals and families who share an enjoyment of and an appreciation for birds and the environment. Founded in 1939, Detroit Audubon is a leader in community education, bird conservation, and wildlife and environmental advocacy.

We have more than 6,000 members concentrated in Wayne, Oakland, and Washtenaw counties.

Ongoing projects:
– Safe Passage Great Lakes: Encourages owners of tall buildings to turn out lights overnight during peak migration seasons, saving the lives of countless birds as they migrate through our region
– Important Bird Areas: Our partnership with National Audubon to identify and protect specific bird habitat
– Advocacy: We connect members with opportunities volunteer and to make their voices heard on behalf of birds and the environment through social media and our quarterly newsletter.
– Educational programs: Detroit Audubon partners with schools, places of worship, nonprofit organizations, and the City of Southfield to deliver programs to youth, seniors, and others designed to educate and develop the next generation of environmental stewards.

Our activities include:
– 20-30 free field trips per year throughout southeast Michigan, Ohio and Canada
– Annual conservation conference featuring speakers on natural history and environmental issues
– Annual Memorial Day Nature Getaway weekend campout
